DINGO 1 in 2000: Fulfilment of mission requirements – Today: The life-saver

The DINGO 1 armoured all-protected transport vehicle (ATV) was introduced in the Bundeswehr in 2000 in order to fill the gap between the light, unarmoured transport vehicle and the light tank. The DINGO 1 completed practical trials in international deployment shortly after during Germany’s involvement in the NATO KFOR mission after the end of the Kosovo war. This was followed by numerous successful missions, such as:

  • ISAF (Afghanistan, since 2001)
  • TFF (Macedonia, 2001–2002)
  • KFOR (Kosovo, since 1999)
    • SFOR (Bosnia-Herzegovina, 1996–2004)

The DINGO 1 is designed to transport five soldiers, is equipped with air conditioning, auxiliary heating, central tyre inflation system, ABS, reverse camera, GPS navigation as well as a radio and exterior telephone system. Armament options include the 40 mm automatic grenade launcher or .50 calibre machine gun.

The perfect execution of a complex challenge

Soldiers’ safety in military missions is of special priority. With the DINGO family, KNDS Deutschland has developed a highly mobile wheeled vehicle which meets this requirement without compromise thanks to its protection concept.

The DINGO was tested and qualified in cooperation with the German defence agencies in conformity with official test conditions. The vehicle has impressively proven its outstanding characteristics in extensive tests against ballistic threats, anti-tank mines, artillery fragments and IEDs. In doing so, it has reduced the risk of injury to the crew below the required level. As such, the DINGO family has a protection level which is unparalleled by other vehicles in its class.

With its safety cell, KNDS Deutschland directly protects occupants from pressure waves and ballistic threats. A mine-proof seating system prevents the blast from explosions being transferred to crew members. Moreover, the protection-optimised stowage concept for equipment and personal gear protects the crew from the secondary effects of mine and IED pressure waves. Combat wheels with run-flat rings ensure sufficient remaining mobility of over 50 km in case the tyre casing is destroyed or the pressure is lost. This guarantees that the vehicle can leave the immediate vicinity of the battle area on its own.

An integrated NBC protection and ventilation system also allows safe operation in contaminated environments.
