The LEOPARD 2 was further developed into the A4 to meet specific customer requirements based on experience gained from the Balkan conflict and in Afghanistan. The system components optimised to protect the vehicle crew have proven themselves among NATO partners in deployment in Afghanistan, and some appear in other variants. As a result, vehicle crews gain effective protection from mines, improvised explosive and incendiary devices and hand-held anti-tank weapons.
Performance characteristics of the LEOPARD 2 A4
The additional protection modules on the turret expand the basic protection to counter the threats at hand and secure the crew’s survival.
The 120mm main gun (calibre length 44) together with high-performance stabilisation ensure exceptional combat capabilities and hit probability during travel.
The underbody has been reinforced in order to protect the crew from mines. Adapted suspension systems eliminate potential dangers to the soldiers.
A combination of thermal imager and low light amplifier, the driver’s night vision system has been improved for front and rear view.
To expand operative capabilities, the A4 is equipped with an engineer interface and additional mounts for attaching a dozer blade, mine plough or mine roller.
